Futurity History - Three Decades Strong

Started in 1980, The Tom Powers Futurity is the oldest continuously operating pleasure futurity in the World.

It began with two classes, Two Year Old Western Pleasure and Two Year Old Hunter Under Saddle. Total payback the first year was $3500.00. There were about twenty five total entries. Classes were held at Tom’s farm in Ada, Michigan either outside in the mud, or in the indoor arena 60 by 240 feet long and dusty.

Despite the unpleasant conditions, the Futurity continued to grow each year. Now entries are well over one thousand and paybacks over $275,000 plus trophies and awards.

This event is unique in that it still held outside in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Exhibitors seem to enjoy returning year after year to the excellent campgrounds and great footing that has made this arena well known throughout the industry. Weather is commonly a factor as thunderstorms, rain and wind have caused plenty of excitement in past years. An indoor arena is available but outside is where everyone wants to show their young entries, many for the first time.

2016 Futurity total paybacks over $279,789 + trophies and awards. The futurity starts with 2 days of PRE FUTURITY classes. All these classes will be NSBA approved, 1 judge, $25/entry no office or drug fe. This part of the show is mandatory no bling or silver. Only legal and plain equipment and showing clothing. No braiding / no banding. Tail extensions optional. Only show halter and show longe line for LL classes will be permitted for practice purpose. The futurity itself will e held from Wednesday through Sunday. Our Stakes sales 2yr old and 3yr old WP classes will also be held during the week along with the Triple Challenge Futurity Yearling Stakes sale on Saturday July 1st. For the 3rd year in a row, we will also be the host to the prestigious Western Sires Super Sires classes.
